Powassan virus is a rare disease spread by ticks, but it can be deadly. Upstate’s tick and Powassan virus expert, Saravanan Thangamani, PhD, explains how the virus is transmitted and what symptoms a person may experience, as well as how it is diagnosed, the lasting damage it can cause, and how to prevent tick bites. Thangamani is a professor of microbiology and immunology at Upstate and director of the SUNY Center for Vector-Borne Diseases.
