Scholarship and Research Opportunities

All resident scholarship and research activities are designed to promote self-directed learning and other needed activities for maintenance of certification. Faculty and staff mentors in the department have expertise in concepts related to disability and health, neurophysiology, spinal cord injury, concussion/brain injury, quality improvement, adult education theory, and systematic search/review methodologies. The Disability and Health Research Team provides support for biostatistics and development of IRB proposal submissions, abstracts/posters, and learning modules.

Quality Improvement

Quality improvement projects are a required activity for residents, and may involve development of an IRB proposal, data collection and analysis, development of an intervention, routine monitoring with analysis, and abstract development.

Research

Residents who are interested in research will have the unique opportunity to work with faculty and their research teams to develop basic or more advanced research skills. Abstracts or publications of case/case series reports can be developed with faculty mentoring. Through our active research programs and with faculty collaboration, we are fortunate to provide resources for resident research.

  • Consultation and support for rigorous research plans (e.g., design, methods, data analysis, biostatistics)
  • Funding for attendance at national/international conferences with accepted abstracts or other presentations

Research Elective 

Elective time dedicated to research is available for residents interested in focusing on research activities. This elective rotation provides an opportunity for focused research work with faculty mentors.

  • One or more of the five elective months can be dedicated to research
  • Opportunities to develop and/or complete clinical or library research

Journal Club

Journal Club is organized to not only discuss novel topics or insights, but to become familiar with basic biostatistics and to be able to determine accuracy of interpretations and clinical applicability.

  • Monthly journal club lead by resident group leaders
  • Journal club facilitated by research experts to provide insight and discussion on methodological aspects of articles
  • Discussion of research practices as well as clinical implications

Medical Student Education

Medical student education opportunities provide leadership opportunities for residents. They also also provide an opportunity for residents to mentor medical students and educate future physicians about PMR.

  • Active PMR Interest Group student club
  • MS4 PMR elective rotation
  • MS3 selective week during Neuroscience rotation
  • Rising MS2 summer clinical externship
